If you want to participate in Poker Staking but do not want to be a horse then you can always stake someone. Staking is as simple as filling out a stake offer form. In this form... »
Poker staking is when a person decides to invest in or “stake” another person into a cash game or a tournament. The person being invested in also known as a “Horse” will then repay the original investor with his/her profits.
Why Get Staked? Many times when I talk to poker players about staking, they have the same thought that I did when I was first presented with the idea. “I don’t need to be staked, I have plenty of my own money”. Well for many players this is true however; do you really have the bankroll necessary to play in the big money tournaments? It is a common rule of thumb that you should have 100 buy ins for any tournament that you are gonna buy into in order to be properly bankrolled. So if this is the case then if you wanted to play in just the $24.00 dollar tournaments on Full Tilt poker you would need a bankroll of $2400.00 . If you wanted to play in the Sunday majors that cost $200.00 each you should have a bankroll of $20,000.00 . As you can see from these examples unless you have a very large bankroll even if you cut the requirement to 50 buy ins you really do not have enough money. So this is where staking comes into play if you use a site like GetAStake.Com you can get bought into these tournaments by various means, weather it being a direct buy in by one backer or by selling stock in yourself to multiple backers.
Typically what will happen is a person will say I’m willing to stake a player in a series of tournaments. Let’s say for example: Ten $11.00 18 man tournaments on a particular poker site. This will get posted in the stakes forum and then people will apply for those stakes. It is never proper to ask for a stake. When the backer posts, he will say what kind of a cut he/she wants; usually it’s 50/50, but often times it’s different. So when the applicant has been accepted, he is transferred money from the original poster, in the amount necessary to play all 10 tournaments. When the applicant, or “Horse” as we like to call him, completes said series of tournaments, he first pays back the Backer, the original amount staked. In this example: $110.00. Then, from the remaining profits, he keeps 50% and gives the backer the other 50%. So this way the backer gets to invest in a player he has hopes for and the player gets to play a tournament series that may be above his bankroll or for whatever reason; a win-win situation. Now, obviously if the horse doesn’t do well, he is less likely to get staked in the future. This is the purest form of what we do. There are other things, but this is just a start.
